University Bremen – Faculty of Geosciences

At the Faculty of Geosciences together with MARUM currently five working groups have their focus in sedimentary geology: Sedimentology and Paleoceanography (Heinrich), Geochronology and Basin Analysis (Kuss), Modelling of Sedimentation Processes (Huhn-Frehers), Marine Sedimentology (Hebbeln) and and Sediment Geochemistry (Zabel).

Currently the following research topics are covered in Bremen

  • Characterisation and temporal evolution of modern and Quaternary shelf and deep sea depositional systems
  • Ocean and Climate: carbonate production/dissolution; coccolithophorid fluxes/ecology/morphometric features
  • Submarine mass movements, canyon systems and contourites
  • Facies analysis of Alpine Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous strata
  • Facies analysis and sequence stratigraphy of Paleozoic and Mesozoic carbonate platforms
  • Interpretation of depositional processes on micro- to basin scale
  • Reservoir characterisation (carbonates)
  • Porosity/Permeability studies of carbonate rocks

Analytical equipment in the field of sedimentary geology
